FreeBSD Blogs and Planet FreeBSD

First, I’d like to apologize for the extended downtime planet freebsd has suffered in the past three weeks. The server was back up a few days ago but the issues I’ve been experiencing since early december were still present. The load on the box was insanely high all the time for very little traffic.

I’ve finally managed to find what was causing it and it seems to be working properly again (as in, requesting the front page doesn’t take 30 seconds amymore). While I was at it, I upgraded WordPress-MU to the freshly released 2.9.1 (video embedding is now dead easy, there’s a integrated picture editor, ...).

Again, sorry for the inconvenience. Happy reading!

blogs.freebsdish.org updated to wordpress-mu 2.8.2

WordPress-MU 2.8.2 fixes a XSS vulnerability and a few other annoying bugs (like the auto-upgrade features).

WordPress-MU updated to 2.8.1

Following WordPress-MU 2.8.1 release, I’ve updated the copy on blogs.freebsdish.org. Apparently there’s a bug with the auto-upgrader as it still says I should update to 2.8.1.

As usual, poke me if you encounter any issue.

FreeBSD(ish) blogs get some TLC

Quick summary of the changes:

  • WordPress MU updated to 2.7.1

  • Automatic upgrade is fixed now, so hopefully I’ll be upgrading wpmu and the plugins faster from now on

  • K2 theme updated: if you’re planning on using it, I recommend activating Advanced Navigation in K2 options and also use Widgets (both in Appearance menu) or your sidebar will look funny.

  • New plugins: All in One SEO (search engine optimization), Sociable (share on social websites), WPhone (iphone friendly css), Akismet (anti-spam), Twitter (display twitter feeds)

  • Removed plugins: Iwphone (superseded by WPhone)

  • Plugins considered for removal (shout if you want to keep them): Sol-Digg and Sol-Delicious (superseded by Sociable), Spam Karma 2 (superseded by Akismet)

Also I’m having issues with bundled OpenID delegation support, so I’ll keep the third-party plugin for now. As usual, send me an email if you would like new themes/plugins, or if something got broken.

blogs.freebsdish.org updated to WordPress-MU 2.7

Apparently I missed the release last week, but it happened finally. I’ll send-pr the update for the port later.

If you encounter any issue, would like a new theme or plugin, leave a comment or drop me an email.

Waiting for WordPress-MU 2.7

With WordPress 2.7 out of the door for a few weeks now, I’m eagerly expecting the release of WordPress-MU 2.7 now. So far I’ve been quite happy with 2.7 running on my personal blogs.

Anyway, in the meantime I’ve been installing more plugins, updating existing ones and also replacing some (both on my blogs and blogs.freebsdish.org). If you’re happen to have a blog there, here are the changes:

  • New: Google Analytics

  • New: WordPress.com statistics (you’ll need a WordPress API to use it, just go to WordPress.com and signup for an account, no need for the blog)

  • New: NextGen Gallery (which actually won’t work, but it will with 2.7)

  • Updated: OpenID

If you would like more themes and/or plugins to be installed, just let me know in the comments.

WordPress-MU updated to 2.6.5

It always takes me some time to update wordpress, but it eventually happens.

Following Tom’s comment the other day, I also fixed media upload, so it’s now possible to upload screenshots or whatever you’re trying to upload.

As usual, if you encounter any problem, please report.

Update: I’ve also install the IWPhone plugin for WordPress, just activate it and you’ll make your iPhone / iPod Touch users very happy :-)

WordPress-MU updated on blogs.freebsdish.org

I updated wordpress-mu to 1.3.0 on blogs.freebsdish.org.

Most noticeable is that people can now leave comments using their OpenID. I’ve also replaced SpamKarma with Bad-Behavior and added a bunch of plugins that people can activate themselves. Have fun!
